GIO Released “AI-enabled Industrial Innovations White Paper”, to Expedite the Digitalization and Innovation of Industries
Recently the 14th GIO ( Global Industry Organizations) High-level Round Table, has published the
AI-enabled Industrial Innovations White Paper with focus on manufacturing industries. The white paper has been supported by international industry organizations, e.g. ZVEI (Electro and Digital Industry Association in Germany), Standardization Council I4.0, German Platform I4.0, World Economic Forum, Alliance of Industrial Internet(AII), and Industrial Value Chain Initiative(IVI) in Japan. This booklet is a collection of key Use Cases in manufacturing with the industrial benefit of AI being mapped to a newly introduced business radar, important for decision makers.
Juergen Grotepass(right), Expert of ZVEI/Germany Platform 4.0 and Advisor of GIO, presented the AI-enabled Industrial Innovations White Paper to William Xu( Middle), Initiator and Chair of GIO
The Use Cases selected were taken from automotive, manufacturing and process industries as they have expedited digitalization in the stage gate process of the design/engineering phase, the operation phase and the maintenance phase, triggering further innovations. Some of them are already industry mature, others -mainly new ones- have proof of concept level being evaluated in further national funded R&D projects. For each use case the customer challenge is introduced, the potential for AI enablement outlined and the value highlighted on the radar chart.
Radar Figure of Customer Value
The AI solutions are understood as enablement to overcome the customer’s pain point and encompass the complete spectrum of AI facets. Some being state of the art AI (like machine learning), latest developments in academics on trusted AI (like physical informed networks) and large language models. Generative AI is under assessment to proof industrial value going beyond actual developments of co-pilot and dialog- based support functions for users in design and operation.
One eye-catching use case of the booklet is the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Digital Product Passports are innovation triggers according Gartner Hype Cycle 2023 as they enable multi- tier cooperation in complex supply chains. Outlook is given on teams of human domain experts and AI services. These mixed teams will be needed to trace data, analyze and select digital twins of services being offered by multiple suppliers in digital markets along the value chain. Value is gained by matching the technical product and process specifications with environmental requirements on energy and product carbon footprint (CO2 consumption) and product delivery time and costs.
Another eye-catching use case of the booklet is the Dynamic Predictive Risk Management in shared human and robot working environments. This is a new certification scheme that has evolved from excluding any risk in defined robot working environments shielded by fences on the shop floor to managing risks in shared workspaces. Use of predictive AI and environment screening for risk monitoring and forecasting of the next 3 seconds based on digital twins of assets and humans approaching the working area to give virtual certifications for machine and robot operation.
The booklet introduces key use cases from automotive, manufacturing and process industries triggering further innovations. With growing complexity however, AI may suggest solutions humans have not thought of. Therefore mixed teams of AI and human actors may become the best innovators when it comes to finding new solutions. With generative AI in mind, we see that a new innovation culture is evolving.
This first publication is meant as a living “work in Progress” document to be continuously being updated by GIO and invited industry organizations across nations (EU, USA, Japan, China) and related think tanks.

-- About GIO --
Global Industry Organizations Roundtable (GIO) was initiated in Barcelona in 2018. As a collaboration platform for global industry organizations, GIO aims to accelerate the digitalization process of all industries globally through communication and collaboration, promote mutual trust and mutual benefit, interoperability and mutual recognition of standards, and collaborative development among various industries.
More than 40 industry leaders from China, Germany, UK, EU, Korea, Japan separately, who are in more than 20 world leading industry organizations, such as China Communication Association(CCA), China Academy of Information and Communications Technology(CAICT), China Association of Communications(CAS), the Institution of Engineering and Technology(IET), German Electro and Digital Industry Association (ZVEI), Global Computing Consortium(GCC), Edge Computing Consortium(ECC), and TM Forum, as well as leading author of the European Commission's AI Act, participated in 14th GIO. All participants shared AI strategies in different countries, discussed new trends and scenarios of AI for Industries, and future directions and starting points for industry organizations collaboration. The AI-enabled Industrial Innovations White Paper released on 14th GIO is another cross-domain and multi-industry collaboration on the GIO platform.
